Chicago Commons
Black and Latino/a families are especially in need of support to recover from the pandemic’s economic impact. Not only did Black and Latino/a families suffer more at the pandemic’s peak, but they are more likely to still be out of a job compared to the average Illinoisan. In addition, low-income job seekers often face hurdles such as trauma exposure and may lack the confidence, resources, and social capital needed to successfully navigate potential career paths. With 95% of Chicago Commons parents being Black women or Latinas, relevant employment services are vital to the success of their recovery. The Family Hub theory of change recognizes that for low-income families to be able to work toward economic stability, underlying health and wellness must be addressed concurrent with goal planning. Chicago Commons’ Family Hub meets critical needs of parents with a uniquely holistic model that pairs early childhood education with employment and post-secondary services, financial coaching, and health and wellness programming. The Pathways Collective Impact Initiative will better support education, job training, and job placement in the post-COVID-19 economy by linking Family Hub with other early childhood care providers, employers, and community-based organizations to create an ecosystem of family-supportive job training, education, and employment opportunities.
