    South Side Jazz Coalition

The South Side Jazz Coalition is a live music production and community service organization, and we request funding to present a live performance concert featuring young performers between the ages of 10 to 25. The concert will be held at Compassion Baptist Church located in southeast Chicago on Saturday June 10 or Saturday June 17. This evening will feature spoken word, dance and live music performance by performers from collaborating grassroots organizations.

    Chicago Chess Foundation

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $5,000

Every June, the Chicago Chess Foundation hosts an All-Girls Chess Tournament for girls from kindergarten through 8th grade. This tournament draws 75-100 girls and their families from across Chicago to participate in a full-day-long chess tournament. On June 10th we will host this All-Girls tournament in the Albany Park neighborhood so that our female youth have empowering and safe activities to do on the weekend between school getting out and Park District camps starting. This will be our 5th year hosting this event, but this year we will be engaging high school-aged girls through our partners at Queens United Chess, a youth-run organization focused on girls' empowerment through chess, who will help us run the event for the day. The event will feature free food (breakfast and lunch) for participants and their families, 5 rounds of competitive chess, a creative activities room, an art and dance room, an auction, a visit from female chess masters, and an awards ceremony. We are expecting participants from partner schools of ours in Humboldt Park, Englewood, Gage Park, East Side, Garfield Park, Marquette Park, and other neighborhoods and will be partnering with fellow Safe and Peaceful grantees, A Step Ahead Chess, to engage even more girls this year than ever.
