United Power for Action and Justice

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $150,000

United Power for Action and Justice has launched the Reclaiming Chicago campaign to address the twin threats facing the future of the city of Chicago: a dearth of affordable homes for purchase and de-population and disinvestment concentrated on the South and West side which has stripped existing Black and Brown homeowners’ of equity. United Power’s Reclaiming Campaign is a proven, community-led initiative to build 1,000 homes on the South Side and 1,000 homes on the West Side of Chicago, strategically and at scale, entire blocks at a time. Reclaiming Chicago is a strategy to replace vacancy, violence, and decades of disinvestment with affordable homes, safe streets, and opportunities for families, especially families of color, to build wealth and equity. To accomplish this, the building of new homes (supply) must be complemented with a robust, citywide pipeline of homeowners (demand) to match the homeownership opportunity Reclaiming Chicago will create. The aim of the Reclaiming Chicago Homebuyer Engagement and Coordination is to engage 2,000 working people, in key institutions (e.g., schools, hospitals and other healthcare providers, daycare centers, unions, universities, large private employers, etc.) across the city of Chicago. In doing so, we will be able to expand the pipeline of potential homeowners city-wide, connect interested people with financial wellness and homeownership preparation courses and connect people to the existing Reclaiming Chicago teams that are leading the effort. Additionally, this project will create greater understanding of the housing interests, needs and challenges faced by a broad cross-sections of workers within these institutions in building wealth and equity.

    Fertile Ground Factory, LLC

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $150,000

"Mister Abbott" is a short documentary film made with the intention to create content about his life that super-serves audiences differently – through spoken word, animation and music. That intention can be likened to a type of documentary/non-fiction filmmaking called the video essay. In making the film we are attempting to create content in an experiential format that provides us the opportunity to interact with an audience to discover and learn how our content creation process is valued, and through data analytics measure its reception with audiences, and its ability to be distributed widely such that the production can stir conversation, debate, and have lasting impact. It further informs us on how to best assist BIPOC producers/creators in producing journalistic and other relevant content in a cost-efficient manner that gives the content creator an opportunity set to ascertain the true value of their intellectual property assets along their path to create wealth. This application seeks to secure funding necessary to complete key elements of Mister Abbott and provide Fertile Ground the opportunity to pursue engagement with audiences and distribution channels.

    Margaret's Village

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $180,000

The mission of Margaret's Village is to provide transitional housing for homeless women, children and families, and to provide experiences that empower, mentor, and support our residents and the broader community so they can achieve their highest potential - turning homelessness and isolation into community and self-sufficiency. In addition, our goal is to provide these services in a safe, loving, comfortable, dignified environment that inspires hope, personal growth and empowerment. We have been successful in our mission for almost 50 years. Maria Shelter, our 50-bed facility serves women and children. The Believe Shelter located in nearby south Chicago, provides 50 beds and serves intact families as well as fathers with children. Our Believe Shelter is uniquely able to accommodate a variety of family configurations, thereby keeping families together as they undergo difficult times. We work with residents to examine, address, and resolve the root causes of their homelessness and foster their transition to independent living. We also offer programs for sustenance and socialization to about 100 area seniors facing loneliness and food insecurity through our Vincennes Senior Center. The Englewood neighborhood in which Margaret's Village is located is one of Chicago's most impoverished communities. Our population is 90 percent Black and 7 percent LatinX, of which 100 percent are below the poverty line. All are indigent when they arrive and are often at the lowest point in their lives, many possessing only the clothes on their backs or a plastic bag of belongings. Margaret's Village works to provide a dignified environment of repair and empowerment combatting years of generational trauma, systemic racism and disinvestment in this community. We serve approximately 400 persons annually. Our shelters serve three hot meals and a snack every day of the year. This grant that will be used to support our general operations and will enable us to continue to provide transitional housing and 105,000 meals annually in a safe, comfortable and dignified environment. This is crucial to the process of change and empowerment that is necessary to break cycles of homelessness and significantly reduce the number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness on the cold and rough streets of Chicago.

    Economic Awareness Council

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $200,000

The proposed initiative, Financial Capability Supports for City Colleges of Chicago Students, will address key areas of financial need identified through the financial capability planning grant work that was recently completed by the Economic Awareness Council (“EAC”), City Colleges of Chicago (“CCC”) and the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (“ISAC”). The successful 2022-2023 planning grant identified 4 key areas of need: understanding & management of the student financial aid process; budgeting for emergencies; credit building; and planning for students’ financial future. These four areas will be addressed by a pilot using the following strategies: inclusion of an expanded financial capability discussion in the financial aid process; increased opportunities for education related to financial aid, credit building, identity protection, saving and investing; one on one mentoring with peer financial educators (money mentors), Working Credit team members and ISAC Student Corp members; hands on behavioral objectives such as checking ones credit, banking, or creating a budget; referrals to ongoing financial coaching & other financial resources within the community as needed; and concrete student incentives (either saving or credit building incentives). This pilot will be supported by the continued growth and work of the financial capability planning team at City Colleges of Chicago.
