Umuwi Ethnic Studies is dedicated to protecting and sustaining ethnic studies and other honest and accurate educational methods in Chicago. Young people–especially BIPOC and multiply-marginalized youth–deserve an education that will promote and strengthen their intellectual, social, and emotional well-being, by cultivating love of self and others, rooting them in understanding who they are and where they come from, and preparing them for future freedom struggles based in solidarity and collective liberation. Our vision is a city in which BIPOC young people and educators see and hear their communities’ stories at the center, not the margins, of our classrooms, schools and youth spaces.
