OPEN Center for the Arts
The Art of Competing Program– the children/youth will explore the history of the pinewood derby cars, the components, how to make, design, paint a derby car and, how to compete. Everyone will have an opportunity to create and race their derby car with a set of rules and limited tools to level out the playing field. Funds will be used, for the coordination, supplies, teaching artists, community engagement, documentation, and admin of this course. The program will run between August 6 – September 2 at OPEN Center for the Arts by the OPEN Team.

Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center
Our organization will treat the youth and adults attending to visit different parts of Chicago to gain a larger view of the city they live in. We will take a boat trip to see architecture along the Chicago river. We will visit Millenium Park and the Cultural Center downtown. We will take participants to the north side to see neighborhoods they are unfamiliar with. We will visit Chinatown and do some shopping there. We will take attendees to Dusable Museum and learn more about African American History.

51st Street Business Association
The 51st Street Business Association plan to host 10-15 children between the ages of 8-15 to participate in the 51st Street Summer Cultural Program. This program will introduce the youth to the cultural aspects of Chicago local museums, teach them the history and pride of their roots and introduce them to the concept of youth entrepreneurship. This program will take place during the Gap period of August 6-21.

Legacy Disciple
With this funding we intend to engage neighbors of West Garfield Park the week of August 12th-18th. The week will commence with a Back to School Bash Community Party (Saturday, August 12th) where the whole community will be invited. This will consist of food, bounce house, basketball, games for younger children, face painting and other activities. The following Monday through Thursday will consist of Community Engagement from 3:00-5:30pm and Community Sports from 5:30-8:00pm. Community Engagement will consist of our Leaders in Training (16-19 year old students) canvassing door to door for a Back to School Campaign announcing the first day of school. At the same time, elders from the community will be asked to be interviewed to share their life stories. This will facilitate cross generational relationships and learning. Community Sports will consist of adult volunteers and our Leaders In Training running sports for younger children 5th-8th grade (approximately 11-15 years old) at a community park (Sumner Park). We will conclude the week with a special outing to an arcade for the most consistent students.
