WESTSIDE RISING
WESTSIDE RISING (WR) is applying for additional Safe and Peaceful Funding for the Gap period in June. A. What are your plans for recruiting and engaging children and youth? WESTSIDE RISING will engage youth that has been previously engaged in our year-round efforts. Additionally, we will also recruit new youth to be involved through referrals, social media, and direct phone banking. Additionally, we will engage our partners in this process to get their youth involved. WR has an organizer and 1-2 staff members that will support this effort. We have secured space and other resources from our community partners to support our activities and functions. B. When do you anticipate providing the services? Please Specify, Memorial Day or Gap in June, or Both. • WESTSIDE RISING will provide these services during the Gap period in June, from June 1 to June 26, 2023. Our efforts include the following activities and events. • Three (3) Boots on the ground days where youth are accompanied and go into the community to conduct surveys, distribute flyers, and talk to residents about concerns, resources, and issues that they hold as important. They will learn how to conduct interviews, data entry, and analysis. • One (1) Youth Perspectives panel on violence and effective prevention strategies for the Juneteenth Festival in Garfield Park: Includes activities, discussion, food, raffles, trivia, games, and performances • One (1) Youth Forum to engage youth and adults in an inter-generational conversation to help reduce violence in our communities: Includes food, speakers, raffles, and networking. C. The age range of children you will serve. • WESTSIDE RISING seeks to reach youth of all ages. More specifically, youth ages 11 to 24. This includes pre-teens, teens, young, and emerging adults. D. How many youths do you anticipate engaging? • We plan to hire up to 5 youths for the month of June 2023 as Youth Ambassadors. Hopefully, we will be able to keep these youth through the first week of August • We will also engage a minimum of 15 youth in our activities and events, for a minimum total of 20 youth. • We anticipate engaging a larger number of community members in our efforts and activities

Joys Helping Hands
We are trying to engage children and building overall community. We focus on teaching the youth games and activities as well as how to cook. It is important for them to learn cooking – including learning recipes, for example homemade barbecue sauce for various reason including career building (including entrepreneurship), but also simply to feed themselves. When we grill, we want to teach them the parts of how to do it, for example how to start a fire. There is much to learn about the community as well, especially the history of North Lawndale and getting to know their neighbours. The better we know folks, the better chance we have for positive interactions.

We plan to use the Memorial Day holiday to hold a recruitment event for youth to participate in our annual Juneteenth community event. We will host an informational session with food, games and lessons on urban farming and history of the West Side. Students then will participate in the week long Juneteenth celebration beginning June 12th. We will host a week long preparation for Juneteenth with participants working in the garden and learning about Juneteenth and their community. June 19th we will have our annual Juneteenth event with food, games, book giveaways and tours of our community garden/peace garden outside of Sumner Math & Science Academy. These events will kick off our summer programming.

IMPACT Family Center
IMPACT Family Center continues to invest in the lives of youth experiencing racism, poverty, violence, housing/food insecurity and other ills associated with growing up in one of Chicago’s most violent communities on the Far Southside. We are creative in addressing life challenges through mental health counseling, empowerment group sessions, mentoring, and skills training, educational enhancements, college/career/trades/green tech/AI exploration. Family involvement helps to improve program outcomes. Youth discovering their voice, learning media-related skills, and learning to work together to improve their skills and the communities in which they live creates empowerment and vested interest. For nearly 19 years, dedicated staff contractors, mentors, alumni, partner organizations, volunteers, and college interns have worked collectively to guide youth in transforming their lives. IMPACT programs are engaging and attract primarily Black and Latinx youth. Engaging the family in support programs increases the youth’s attendance, completion of programs, and surpass program benchmarks. We will also offer Friday Family Fun & Movies in the PARKing Lot to provide fun and activities to engage youth closer to home. For nearly 19 years, dedicated staff contractors, mentors, alumni, partner organizations, volunteers, and college interns have worked collectively to guide youth in transforming their lives. IMPACT programs are engaging and attract primarily Black and Latinx youth. Engaging the family in support programs increases the youth’s attendance, completion of programs, and surpass program benchmarks. We will also offer Friday Family Fun & Movies in the PARKing Lot to provide fun and activities to engage youth closer to home. IMPACT will provide a safe space with introductory-level diverse programming to engage youth in popular topics or interest throughout the month of June that will segue into One Summer Chicago and PlayStreets activities and general summer programming through September. We will do hands-on short courses to allow youth to learn and see the results of their learning. The majority of our instructors and staff are alumni who grew up in the organization and other caring professionals. Volunteers from Chicago Cares, Order of Eastern Stars, Masons, and Black Fraternities and Sororities will serve as guest instructors, mentors, and general program supporters.

TELPOCHCALLI COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROJECT INC
The Summer Peace Leadership program develops young leaders who shape the future of their communities by promoting peaceful, nonviolent strategies. It provides a safe space for at-risk-youth to find peaceful pathways for themselves and their peers; it discourages them from participating in violent behavior or joining gangs. Students come from environments where they are financially, socially, and academically underserved. Program Objectives: Educate and help youth develop conflict resolution and peace-building skills; empower youth to be confident about themselves and their skills; develop leadership qualities so that they take ownership of and make positive contributions to their families, schools, and communities.

Burst Into Books
Our application will explain the activities we will host for the youth at our building during June 6th to June 26th. We will have a staff of four that can lead and facilitate the activities that will be available each day. Funds will be used to buys games, supplies and snacks for participants. Also, it will help to pay stipends for staff members who will be facilitating the activities.
