    Black Millennial Renaissance

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $5,900

At Black Millennial Renaissance (BMR), we equip students with the tools and frameworks necessary to be champions of justice and equity. We know that for movements to not be reduced to moments they require the dedication of impassioned individuals to maintain momentum. Through BMR's Justice & Equity Fellowship, our fellows will be empowered through hands-on training and heart-centered mentorship to become the next generation of community organizers, policy advocates, and more. Our fellows are provided a weekly stipend to help alleviate the barriers that exist when pursuing internships, fellowship programs, and other similar leadership opportunities. We believe that a well-rounded education and a community of support are foundational components of our young people's success. We seek the Young Leaders Fund's support in our pursuit of raising more champions for justice.

    People Empowering People NFP

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $5,600

People Empowering People's (PEP) mission is to build a healthier, more vibrant, and economically stable community by providing capacity-building support to community-based organizations and administering financial education and career coaching programs that enhance the financial security of low-income families in the Chicagoland community. PEP provides aid to community-based organizations in building capacity and leaders within the organization, supports women, and gives them the tools to increase control over their lives. PEP combats inadequate access to menstrual supplies and wants to end the shame associated with menstruation. Feminine hygiene experiences aren’t uncommon. We aim to create a collective awareness of the menstruation cycles, by providing informed support and additional wellness resources. We have developed an outreach program to help alleviate the stressors associated with menstruation. PEP Chicago will recruit 10 youth ages 18-24, prioritizing those impacted by the criminal justice system to complete a 12-week program that will empower and give them the skills and opportunity to use what they’ve learned through community service. Illinois House Bill 155 states that one out of every four women regularly struggles to purchase menstrual products due to lack of income. PEP Chicago plans to combat this through our program, We Got You Period, which supports communities most affected by violence. This program will provide youth with hand on skills training, mentorship, access to certification programs, employment placement support, and civic and community engagement. During the 12 weeks, youth will learn about Period Poverty and create a system to engage with women in need of feminine products. This program will teach youth transferable skills in supply chain management and give them the ability to gain hands-on experience through packaging feminine hygiene products. Hands-on training will be given through our partnership with the Period Collective and Max Candle Co to package and ship feminine hygiene products to those in need within the Chicagoland area. Youth will assist in supply chain logistics of shipping, processing, and systems management. Other teachings offered to students include: ○ Life Skills ○ Career Readiness ○ Interview & Resume Skills ○ Financial literacy ○ Basic Supply Chain Logistic Training ○ Access to Certification Training ○ Employment Placement Assistance Upon completing the 12 weeks, the youth will receive ongoing mentorship and support with additional skills training/certifications and employment placement assistance. Youth will also join the cohort of Alumni that connects to share resources and best practices.
