The African American Legacy has provided grants in the past for Strengthening African American Families. In 2013, its grant making focus is Voice not Violence, through which it will support organizations with programming to develop the voices of African American youth in order to reduce violence.
Eligibility
- Eligible programs include, but are not limited to:
- Conflict resolution training for youth
- Developing youth leaders in anti-violence efforts
- Juvenile justice or other organizing or advocacy by youth
- Writing, public speaking, filmmaking or other anti-violence cultural productions by young people
- Reducing trauma through therapy or group discussion
- Convening peace circles or developing restorative justice programs
- Note: AAL is particularly interested in organizations serving youth aged 10 to 14
- Note: Support for general after-school or youth programming that is not aimed at both developing youth voices and reducing violence is not eligible.
Grant Amounts
- Up to 6 organizations will receive grants
- Up to $40,000 annually per organization
- Renewable up to three years

Review and selection
Applicants may receive a site visit, telephone call or other communication from the Trust staff as part of the proposal review process.
The AAL Board of Advisors will send letters of notification to all applicants by the end of September 2013.
