Every September, Chicago kicks off the international fall art season, hosting one of the world’s leading forums for contemporary art and culture.

EXPO CHICAGO brings artists and audiences together from around the world, connecting communities in unexpected ways. That’s why—as a connector and convener of community, and a longtime supporter of diverse artistic traditions—The Chicago Community Trust is pleased to present an exhibition for the first time at this year’s EXPO CHICAGO, taking place September 13-17 at Navy Pier.

The Trust has commissioned Chicago artist Faheem Majeed to create an installation that sparks dialogue and invites engagement. Planting and Maintaining a Perennial Garden is a part of an ongoing series of work that utilizes cedar wood panels to host a variety of interventions.

Based on the 1930’s New Bauhaus-designed wood paneling in the South Side Community Art Center’s Margaret Burroughs Gallery, these panels serve as a didactic tool that physically record the artists and community members who experience them.

The configuration on display at EXPO CHICAGO will be similar to the work shown in Majeed’s solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. This takes the shape of a brown gallery structure within a white-walled space—literally and metaphorically transforming the gallery and challenging its social and political dimensions, specifically highlighting the issues of diversity in the arts.

In addition to the installation, the Trust’s EXPO booth will present artwork and performances by cultural organizations from across Chicago, including Project Onward, SkyART, the OMB100 Gwendolyn Brooks Centennial Celebration and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. We look forward to welcoming you to the booth, for an inspiring exploration of local art and activism.
