Motivated by their belief that access to books is a right, not a privilege, Liberation Library provides books to young people in prison to inspire imagination, encourage self-determination and foster a connection to the outside world.

Youth select books of their choosing from the Library’s inventory, which includes a range of genres. Titles like Tyrell or Bronxwood by Coe Booth, which feature young people dealing with relatable challenges—drugs, homelessness, poverty—are especially popular.

A handwritten note accompanies each book, providing another connection to the outside word and letting the young offenders know that they are not alone. Free Spirit Media shares their story:
